Kids Program

Help your children develop confidence, skills and fitness to serve them a lifetime

Gracie Barra Shellharbour is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school with a strong focus on kids classes.

Our Kids Program embodies the lessons and values we all want to instil in our children.

Through learning the fundamentals of Jiu Jitsu for self-defence, it helps shape our students into strong, resilient, confident, and caring people who respect others.

In a martial art where persistence is rewarded, the mat offers valuable learning experiences for kids from 3 to 15 years old which will last a lifetime.

WHAT ARE THE KIDS CLASSES LIKE AT GRACIE BARRA SHELLHARBOUR?

The class is a mix between warm up, drills, self-defence and BJJ techniques and sparring. Our black belt professors and instructors are there to assist the kids and offer them gentle correction during the techniques ensuring they are training in a fun and safe environment. Our Kids Program is structured similarly to the adult courses, with adaptations and modifications made to reach different levels and abilities.

All classes are organised by age group:

  • Tiny Champions (3-4 yo)
  • Little Champions I (5-6 yo)
  • Little Champions II (7-9 yo)
  • Juniors (10-12 yo)
  • Teens (13-15 yo)

WHAT ARE THE MAIN BENEFITS OF BJJ FOR CHILDREN?

Non-violent Self Defence Martial Art

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teaches students how to use technique to overcome a potentially bigger opponent. A defence system built on grappling, Jiu Jitsu does not use any striking, such as kicks or punches. It’s all about technique - some say it’s like playing chess with your body.

Confidence and Self Esteem

Learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is no easy task. Students are faced with challenges and will undergo defeat as they grow. This teaches students how to overcome adversity, building confidence and self-esteem. They will learn how to gracefully win and lose in a safe and supportive environment.

Focus, Energy, Persistence

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that requires students to pay attention and hold focus as one momentary lapse in concentration can cost them in an exchange. This ability to persist with a task and concentrate for an extended period of time carries over to all areas of life and will help them at school and work.

Fun, Friends, Sense of Belonging

Last but not least, BJJ is about having fun and generating strong friendships. It provides a sense of belonging and community. When kids are exposed to martial arts, they become part of a larger community with greater purpose. Everyone who steps foot on the mat is equal. We are all there to improve on our abilities and grow as people.

At Gracie Barra Shellharbour we have fostered an incredibly supportive community of members who are consistently encouraging others to give their best and not quit on themselves. Being around these types of people is tremendous for a child’s growth in self-confidence. They will feel accepted for who they are. They will feel as though they belong.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We understand that walking into a completely new environment filled with people you have never met before can be intimidating, especially for kids.

Here are a few common questions we receive. Please reach out to our team if your question has not been answered!

My child is being bullied at school - can Brazilian Jiu Jitsu help?

Absolutely. We strongly encourage any child who is experiencing bullying on any level to get into martial arts, particularly Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

By learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, children will learn how to deal with people who are bullies in a non-violent, calm manner. If necessary, they will know how to defend themselves without throwing any punches or kicks. Also, by joining Gracie Barra Shellharbour they will immediately become part of an amazing community filled with other kids just like them, experiencing similar circumstances, which ultimately helps them feel as though they are not alone and there are other kids they can be friends with.

Will my child become aggressive by learning Martial Arts?

No, it is the exact opposite. The principles of martial arts, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu especially rest in teaching students the skills, techniques, and tactics are for self-defence only. You are never the aggressor. By learning these skills, children often become more calm and confident. They develop patience, understanding, and tolerance.
